  • features an augmented reality compass (iPhone 3GS only).
  • lets you choose locations from a preset list of famous locations (every country in the world with its capital and more than 100 places you must have seen).
  • lets you build your own personal list by hand, by using your current position, or by setting a position on the map.
  • offers three different input formats for longitude and latitude, e.g. can be copied from geocache sites.
  • allows you to mail your current position to a friend.
  • automatically includes by email received LocFinder positions.
  • lets you learn more about famous locations on the corrensponding Wikipedia pages.
  • gives you information about your current location.
  • can simply be used as a compass.

LocFinder works different for the iPod touch, iPhone, iPhone 3G, and iPhone 3GS!

iPhone 3GS

  • has GPS and a built in compass.
  • the arrow and the compass direction and the distance are always correct.
  • works perfectly!!!

iPhone 3G

  • has GPS but does not have a built in compass.
  • LocFinder knows the location but has to calculate the device orientation. It does so by you moving straight forward for about 20 m (18 yd).
  • the arrow and the compass directions are only correct directly after the iPhone has calculated the device orientation.
  • the distance is correct since it is determined via GPS.
  • works well!

iPhone

  • neither has GPS or a built in compass but has GSM triangulation and WLAN positioning.
  • the arrow and the compass directions are not usable.
  • the estimated position is less accurate than with GPS. The distance is about right.
  • Besides the distance you can view the famous and the personal locations on the globe or on the map and browse the corresponding Wikipedia pages.
  • works partly (not recommended).

iPod touch

  • only has WLAN positioning.
  • the arrow and the compass directions are not usable.
  • the distance only works around WLAN points (presumably larger cities).
  • The map and the browser view only work if you are connected to a WLAN.
  • works poorly (not recommended).
